Brooklyn Rabbi Among 2 Dead in Wrong-Way Accident on NYS Thruway

According to authorities, an automobile travelling the wrong way on the New York State Thruway collided head-on with another vehicle early Tuesday, spreading twisted debris across the road and creating significant delays. Both drivers were killed in the collision.

Around one in the morning, State Police responded to a crash on a roadway in Tuxedo, Orange County, and discovered the two dead there. The accident occurred between exits 16 in Harriman and 15a in Sloatsburg while one of the vehicles was travelling north in the southbound lanes, according to the preliminary inquiry.

There were only the drivers in each vehicle. As of Tuesday midday, the police had not provided any information on them; nevertheless, a Brooklyn neighbourhood reported that Rabbi Yidel Weinstock, one of its clergy members, was among the two fatalities.

On Rodney Street in Williamsburg, memorial services for Weinstock were held throughout morning.

Overnight, all southbound lanes were closed for several hours while investigators looked into the matter. At the Harriman exit, traffic was being diverted.

According to State Police, more details will be made public as they become available.
