Shooting near Kenwood Academy claims the life of a CPS student

A shooting that happened Friday afternoon in Hyde Park close to Kenwood Academy High School claimed the life of a student from Chicago Public Schools.

Just after noon, the 17-year-old teenager got into a fight with some persons in a car outside the 1600 block of East 50th Place, according to Deputy Police Chief Ron Pontecore.

According to Pontecore, the car pursued the youngster into a parking lot where two persons exited and started firing at him.

The youngster was shot in the head and later declared dead at the University of Chicago Medical Center, according to the police.

Chicago Public Schools (CPS) authorities released a statement in which they said, “All of us are heartbroken to learn of the death of another young life and we express our heartfelt condolences to the family, friends, and community members impacted by this tragedy.”

Principal Karen Calloway stated that the teen was a part of the school community in an email to Kenwood families, but she gave no other information about his identification.

Calloway claimed that she put the school on a “soft” lockdown after learning of the nearby incident and cancelled off-campus lunch.

Stacy Davis Gates, president of the Chicago Teachers Union, stated in a statement, “Mothers don’t bring our children to school to be killed.” We’re preparing to bury another youngster here, and we’re sending our condolences to yet another family and yet another school community. Our entire city deserves more, and it hurts.

The shooting seems to be premeditated, according to University of Chicago police. University police reported that they saw a grey Dodge Challenger driving away from the area without any licence plates.

No one was being held in custody.
